I have been using the Inferno & Freezie Wraps since November,2012. I saw an orthopedic doctor after Thanksgiving and have been going to occupational therapy (3) days per week. I was told by my ortho doctor to continue to use the items that I had purchased from you (I brought them in on my initial visit with him). I wanted to get back to you with feedback about the Inferno Wrap. So far we are very pleased with the size, light weight, flexibility and comfort of the wrap. It is very convenient the way the cord is set up. If one has to leave the area for a moment it is much easier now because instead of removing the entire wrap or unplugging the whole thing from the wall, you can just detach at the segment. I like the on/off switch, too. It is much easier to see which setting it is on. Everything about this new product seems more intelligent and user friendly. Things are going well with my healing sessions. I had it three times daily with each session lasting 20 minutes maximum for two weeks. I noticed reduction of pain in my third day using the Inferno Wrap. In my Second week I reduced the sessions to just one (20 Minute) per day. The pain is almost gone except when I make a wrong and abrupt move on or of my right (problematic) shoulder. Hopefully, I do not have to use the Freeze Wrap this summer when I do most of my heavy yard work, but I am assured that there is this cold treatment if in case I hurt my shoulder again. I now have decided not to have an MRI on my shoulder and undergo more expensive treatments or therapy from my specialist ortho doctor . I think his diagnosis of "Frozen shoulder" or possible rotator cup tear are correct. I will be watching my progress and if condition gets worse, I will call him again for appointment. I love the products and I can definitely tell they are making a big difference in my healing. I just wish I had known of your products even sooner. I was in a serious motorcycle accident back in July and broke 17 bones, had a collapsed lung, and had numerous twists and sprains along with a lot of swelling. I was in the intensive care unit for 7 days and then in the hospital for 7 more before I was able to go home. To make a long story short, since using your products my pain level has gone down immensely and the swelling is finally under control. I even take the Inferno wrist and back wrap to work and use it since I have a desk job that makes it possible. I am down to just walking with a cane now and will probably be able to get rid of that in about two weeks. Thank you for spending time answering my questions and concerns on the Knee Inferno Wrap and wrist products and how to use them. I appreciate that, and I am impressed with your company's personal availability to personally talk with customers. In a fast pace, seemingly no care, 'all out for my benefit' mentality in our society it is refreshing to know I can go on-line and there are people doing business who do care for their product and the people buying them.
I went on-line to find help in treating my very painful meniscus and other issues Arthroscopic surgery on my right knee, that were more severe that my left knee issues had been, so I could find help in speeding up my recovery and get back on my feet again. Having had the same surgery on my left knee only 6 months prior, I was not able to recover as fast as my left knee had not yet fully recovered enough to take the full load of both knees. The Dr. said nothing about recovery only that I could not even put toe weight on my right knee for 4 weeks. So, with my left knee still in recovery this made life extremely difficult. Cold can Make Your Groin Muscle Spasms & Tightness Worse - How?

When Should You Use Cold to Treat Your Groin Pain?

Cold compression works best to relieve pain, swelling and inflammation for new injuries, re-injury and during immediate post surgery recovery. Cold therapy should also be used during the first 24 - 72 hours of treatment, combined with resting your groin injury.

Cold should be used for new injuries or right after re-injury.

If you've been suffering for some time to time with a chronic injury or condition you should only use cold after activity causes you more pain or triggers more inflammatory symptons (red, hot, inflamed, swollen). When used at this time cold compression becomes a natural / organic pain reliever, treating the site where you feel the pain.

Sometimes we feel pain while doing a certain activity - should you still use cold? Too much cold therapy can reduce your ability to heal correctly, because cold is a short term pain reliever not a deep tissue healer. This is VERY IMPORTANT to remember for a groin injury, because too much cold for your groin can actually make your injury last longer.

We put milk in the fridge so it will stay fresh longer. We do this so it will stay in the same condition as when we bought it. Your groin injury is no different. Too much cold will keep your groin injury in the same state - slowing down the healing process. This can sometimes make chronic injuries linger even longer. Heat (Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy) should be used when you suffer from chronic, tight or stiff groin injuries and after you reduce swelling, pain and inflammation with cold.

Here are a couple of examples for when to use cold (ice):

  • You have a strained groin injury that's been on-going for quite some time. You're having a "good day" (your injury is feeling fine) and decide to drop into a yoga class. You realize afterwards that was a bad idea because your groin is even more painful than the day before. You can hardly move without feeling the shooting pains in your thigh/groin. You should use COLD on your groin to stop further damage to your soft and help ease the pain. This cold should only be used for 20 minutes at a time when needed, and should stop as soon as the acute pain, swelling and inflammation go away.

  • You have a painful case of a pulled groin muscle. You're in the kitchen, putting away groceries, and bend/twist to empty the bags. You forgot about your injury because it's no longer hurting, but opps... Reaching for that bending/reaching for those groceries just reminded you about your pulled groin muscle injury with a sharp pain/twinge. You stop and ask someone else to get the groceries for you or you decide to turn, crouch down properly, and move the groceries to a higher counter to reduce bending/twisting (you stopped the activity that was causing pain). The pain is gone which means NO cold compression is needed. In this case heat (Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy) should be used to encourage healing of your injured groin instead.

It's crucial to use cold after any sort of activity causes you on-going pain, swelling and/or inflammation.

 

When is Ice too Cold?
When are Blue Gel Packs not Cold Enough?

Ice is frozen water. That might sound like a silly statement - but water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and becomes a solid. Using ice straight out of your freezer may drop the ice to a chilling 10.4 degrees Fahrenheit. If you put something that cold on your skin (below freezing) the extreme icy cold will start to damage your cells and may burn your skin (this is something called 'cryoburn').

Ice is also a solid, making the surface hard and rigid. When you're in pain, placing a rock hard block of ice onto a painful area causes a totally uncomfortable feeling. Sometimes you'll have to hold your body in weird angles in order to get the ice to balance on or wrap around your groin injury in the exact right place where you need the cold most.

Ice is freezing cold when it hits your skin, this is too cold for effective cold compression therapy.

Traditional blue gel packs contain dyes and anti-freeze (a very harsh toxic chemical). With so many chemicals it's impossible for these packs to freeze at all. They only cool down a little instead of getting to cold enough temperatures for effective treatment. Without the ability to freeze how is the temperature going to provide you with the cold your need to help you? After you pull it out of the freezer is it going to actually stay cold as long as you need it? Is it safe? Liquid gel will pool away from your groin injury and migrate to the bottom of the bag - not providing you with cold coverage where you need it most.

How Do You Use Heat / Warm Temperatures to Heal & Recover from a Groin Injury?


Cold should be used for new injuries or right after re-injury.

HEAT (warmth) is used after you've reduced your swelling / inflammation and the sharp pain is less intense (you have more of a dull / nagging ache and soft tissue tightness in your groin). Warming up your tissue is a natural way to encourage healing of your deep tissue. Increasing the temperature of your deep tissue will result in increased blood flow circulation. It's the blood in your body that will bring oxygen, nutrients, antibodies and energy to your injured tissue to help with healing.


Heat can Make Inflammation, Swelling and Newer Injuries Worse - How?

When we injure ourselves, we start healing right away. The body will naturally raise the temperature at the site of the injury resulting in the inflammatory response (redness, heat sensation, inflammation and swelling). This 'fake fever' leaks blood flow to the area to cool it down and start the healing process.

Adding 'heat' to your groin injury when it's already inflamed and tender may make your body think there's a new threat to your tissue and increase the pain in order to get you to stop. For some people applying heat on inflamed / swollen tissue will cause the injury to swell-up even more (as much as 3 times larger than normal). You'll feel even more pain as the pressure builds on top of your groin injury.

Heat is NOT a good treatment method for inflamed groin injuries, new injuries (within the first 24 to 72 hours), right after surgery or right after a re-injury. In these cases, heat should be applied later on in the healing cycle. In the meantime, cold compression with a Freezie Wrap® should be used to decrease any swelling and inflammation induced pain.

 

When Should You Use Heat to Heal Your Groin Injury?

Heat / warming temperature treatment works best to increase blood flow circulation and stimulate healing for older (chronic) injuries, re-injury (after swelling has been reduced) and during long-term post surgery recovery. Warmer temperatures should be used approximately 3 to 5 days after you first have the injury. Heat should not be started for a least 2 weeks after surgery because inflammation levels will be very high as the healing process starts over again. Any use of heat should also be combined with gradual movement to stretch out your groin and increase range of motion.

Increase blood flow to your hamstring, quadriceps, calf, shins and/or groin with a Leg Inferno Wrap.

If you have a chronic groin injury that keeps getting re-injured you should use heat before activity to loosen up your groin (making it more flexible). When used at this time the warm temperatures naturally extend the elasticity (elastic-nature) of your deep tissue, making it more movable / pliable for activity.

Using heat is a good long-term plan because it will help to stimulate healing and can also be used on a preventive basis to strengthen the weak soft tissue in your groin. We use warm temperatures / heat to speed up the process of baking something in the oven or melting the snow outside, your injury is no different. Heat will speed up the natural healing rate in your body by increasing your blood flow circulation. This in turn brings all the components your tissue needs to heal - oxygen, nutrients, anti-bodies and energy.

Here are a couple of examples for when to use warm temperatures (heat):

  • You suffered from a tear in a tendon or muscle in your groin a few months ago, but since then the injury has healed a little and you no longer feel pain everyday. You started playing in a new rec baseball league and notice your groin feels tight and achey the day after your practices and games. When is Heat too Hot?
When are Other Heating methods not Hot Enough?
Hot water bottles are awkward to use and don't penetrate the heat deep enough for effective treatment.

Hot water bottles, hot baths / showers and other heating methods have been used to soothe sore joints and soft tissue forever. The problem with using traditional heating devices is that the low-level energy gets too hot for our skin but not hot enough for our deep muscle tissue.

Your skin is like your armor - it's a protective shield. This means the heat energy needs to pass through your protective shield to reach deep enough into the tissue to promote blood flow for healing. Turning up the heat with hot water bottles, hot baths or other heating methods that heat up the skin first means we're trying to push the energy inside by force. It's just like when you use your oven to bake a cake for 45 minutes. The heat energy starts cooking the cake on the outside to work it's way in. You have to stick a toothepick in the cake to know when the inside's done.

Applying therapy that heats your skin first will make your skin feel too hot before the heat even penetrates deep into your muscle tissue.

Using heat when the energy is only pushing into the top layers of the skin won't give you deep tissue healing. In this case, the blood is actually rushing AWAY from the injury site to the surface of your skin. This makes you really FEEL the heat.

If you feel the heat is the therapy really helping you on deep tissue level? NO, feeling the heat means it's only warming your outter layers of skin - much like baking a cake. There's even a condition for overuse of a skin-level heat source called toasted skin syndrome, hot water bottle rash, fire stains, laptop thigh, or granny's tartan (reference: 1).

A Summary of How Ice & Heat Affect Your Blood Flow


Imagine you're standing in your living room at home. When the air in that room is at a normal room temperature (ambient temperature), your body is in a comfortable state. Your heart rate and blood pressure are normal (or whatever 'normal' is for you).



Imagine the air has cooled down to freezing...

Applying cold constricts your blood vessels decreasing fluid retention and swelling in muscles.

When the room becomes cooler your heart rate begins to slow down and your blood pressure increases. Your body does this automatically to retain heat in your body. At this time your soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc) will also start to squeeze on and contract all of the veins in your body carrying blood flow. This also helps to decrease the amount of blood flowing throughout your circulatory system and retains the heat.

When cold is applied to a groin injury, the soft tissue in your groin squeezes on the veins to slow down your blood flow. This in turn clamps down on the amount of fluid leaking into your injured tissue, decreasing your swelling. This is why cold is used immediately to treat newer groin injuries or re-injuries. The cold slows down your body to stop the amount of damage happening to your tissue and decrease your swelling. This cold also has a nice side benefit of numbing the nerves in and around the injured area thereby decreasing your pain.

In the medical world this is something called 'Vasoconstriction'.



Imagine the air has warmed up enough that you start sweating...

Applying heat expands your blood vessels increasing blood flow to muscle injuries.

When the room becomes warmer your heart rate speeds up and your blood pressure decreases. Your body is trying to increase your blood flow to cool down your body.

When heat is applied to a groin injury, your veins will start to get bigger (expand) to allow more blood flow through your soft tissue. This in turn relaxes your tissue, making the it more flexible and elastic. This is why heat is used on older (chronic) injuries and groin spasms / cramps, to loosen tissue and bring in the blood flow needed for healing. Your body will begin to heal itself after its' injured. Increasing your blood flow with heat will actually speed up this natural process.

Doctors usually call this process 'Vasodilation'.



Some other things happen when you're hot and cold...

When you're cold you'll start to shiver and your fingers, nose and/or toes will get coldest first. This agian, is your body trying to retain the heat so all major organs can still function. When you're hot you'll start to sweat. Sweating is the body's natural way of cooling itself down.


Knowing when to use hot and cold and which is better for your blood flow is easy when you remember how your body reacts to cold weather vs hot weather. Both temperatures are helpful for natural groin injury healing when used at the right time in the healing cycle.

You would be suprised by how many people there are that don't understand the importance of stretching a groin injury. Before returning to full activity after a groin injury, physical therapists prescribe gentle stretching for your groin... This is because stretching is the secret of healing any groin injury. Consistent stretching is one of the only solutions available to break up scar tissue that forms in your soft tissue as it heals.

Step 1 - Warm Up Your Groin

Physical therapists will warm up your muscle by performing deep tissue massage.

For this 1st step many physical therapists will use heat, manual manipulation, deep tissue massage, clinical ultrasound devices or a warm bath to warm up your groin. The goal during this first step is to increase healthy blood flow circulation and relax your soft tissue.

'Warming up' your groin will increase the elastic-nature of your soft tissue making it much easier to stretch and when needed, hold the stretch. This will also extend the amount that you will be able to stretch your groin.

Use the Leg Inferno Wrap® for 15 to 20 minutes at least half an hour before stretching your groin. Step 2 - Stretch Your Groin

After your groin is warmed up your physical therapist will guide you through stretches to improve mobility.

The main goal of physical therapy is to exercise (stretch out) your groin to improve flexibility and range of motion. After the physical therapist has warmed up your soft tissue, they'll get you to do a series of exercises that are focused on stretching out your groin.

This exercise may include heel slides that are focused moving and flexing the soft tissue in your groin, thigh and hip.

Sometimes cardiovascular exercise, like using a stationary bike or treadmill, will be recommended under the supervision of your physical therapist.


Improve Your Range of Motion at Home

The Knee-Flex® can be used to perform consistent stretching that's beneficial to all of the muscle groups in your groin, thigh and hip. Start off with 10 repititions of the Knee-Flex® stretch at least once everyday. Increase your repititions as the movement becomes more fluid and natural for you.

You can easily modify these stretches to further work out different soft tissue in your groin, thigh and/or hip by turning your foot in toward your other leg (point your toe in) when sliding your leg out away from your body, then turning your foot out away from your body (point your toe out to the side) when sliding your leg in toward your hips/lower back.

Another subtle change to this movement is pointing your toe forward when sliding your heel out, away from your body. You can then flex your foot up (pointing your toe to the cieling) when flexing your knee and bringing your heel back toward your body.

These small changes in movement will boost the amount of work your groin is doing while using the Knee-Flex®.

Why are groin injuries so hard to over come? In two words - scar tissue.

Soft tissue (tendons, muscles, ligaments, etc) is meant to be soft and flexiable, ready to work and move extreme forces in everyday activities. Damaged soft tissue in your groin heals with scar tissue; little tiny band-aids that overlap each other on the tissue mending the injury. With the added scar tissue the soft tissue becomes rigid, less ready to move and unable to recieve the full force of your movements. If you're suffering with scar tissue now you may feel the effects with stiffness, tightness, weakness and tiredness in your thigh.

Scar tissue builds on the muscle as the tears heal. The build up causes pain and inflexibility making your muscle more prone to further injury.

Scar tissue can form fast to bring together the edges of a tissue tear, but working fast doesn't mean that the job's done right. When scar tissue forms it doesn't come together as neatly as regular (healthy) tissue would. Scar tissue fibers will lay down over top of your tear in a cluttered, messy and jumbled up way.

Imagine throwing a bunch of drinking straws in the air... When those straws hit the ground they'll land in a random, unorganized way. It even seems silly to think that those straws could land perfectly straight and all in the same direction.

Stretching helps to organize the scar tissue, increasing the strength of this tissue so it's more like the weave of a basket.


Step 3 - Cool Down Your Tissue

Toward the end of your appointment your physical therapist may introduce cold compression, acupuncture, or TENS to relax your groin after the intense stretching and exercise.

The function of the groin muscles (adductors) is to "adduct" the thigh. In simpler terms it means the groin muscles pull the femur (large bone in upper leg) and knee inward. It is very convenient the way the cord is set up. If one has to leave the area for a moment it is much easier now because instead of removing the entire wrap or unplugging the whole thing from the wall, you can just detach at the segment. I have been using the Inferno & Freezie Wraps since November,2012. I saw an orthopedic doctor after Thanksgiving and have been going to occupational therapy (3) days per week. I was told by my ortho doctor to continue to use the items that I had purchased from you (I brought them in on my initial visit with him). I am currently using the inferno wrap as soon as I wake up in the morning, then continue to do my daily wrist and arm exercises. I use the freezie wrap when I am finished. While working I use a tennis elbow brace and I am also using it while doing housework or other chores where I am using my arm alot. I recently went to a Rheumatologist and was diagnosed with DeQuervains tenosynovitis. I am a very active individual. If I am not running or lifting weights you can usually find me doing various outdoor and home improvement projects. That is why when I recently started experiencing pain in my shoulder, upper arm and forearm I concluded that I had aggravated an old rotator cuff injury.
